Without further ado, let’s jump right into the extermination of your termite problem.

What Are Termites?

Termites are small animals (insects) living in large colonies. They work together to feed on wood and dead plant matter. There are two common types of termites; the worker and the swarmer. Workers make their way through mud tubes to build the road map for the swarmers. Swarmers search for wood material and plant matter to bring back to the base.

Why Do You Need To Get Rid of Termites?

Termites are known as pests for many homeowners. They are a successful insect species wreaking havoc on my homes. Termites will deteriorate the structure of a home by chewing away the wood face. Not only will they eat away at your home, but they could kill crops and plantations.

Exterminating termites is one of the only successful tactics for keeping your home and crops safe. If you don’t fully remove them, they could come back, resulting in a repetitive situation.

Termite Treatment

So, how to get rid of termites? There are a few ways. Depending on your choice of method, first, you should locate every part of the house where they are present. To spot the presence of termites, look for these signs:

  • Damaged wood (especially closer to the ground).
  • Mud tubes run along foundations and walls.
  • Small pieces of wood shavings that are smaller than a grain of rice (from dry wood termites)

After you spot the area of invasion, choose whether to contact a professional or not. If you choose to work with a professional, they will deploy the best methods and tools to get the job done fast. If you want to remove them yourself, you can choose from the two methods below.

Using Insecticides

Choosing to use insecticides will guarantee the best results.

Termite professionals drill small holes into the wood where they suspect termites are currently burrowing. Drill the holes in a checkerboard formation every 12 inches. Once all holes are in the wood, inject the insecticide into the wall.

This chemical is strong and fast acting. Through a repetitive series of this procedure, the chemical will soon affect the entire colony within the wood.

Using Bait Stations

The second option is to use bait stations. Bait stations consist of stakes or boxes with food laced in chemicals (poisons) that are placed around your home in the ground. Termites that want to enter the home will not resist stopping by the bait station first.

The foraging termites will take pieces of the bait and deliver them back to their home base, where the rest of the colony is. The bait will then begin to take effect on the termites within three days to two weeks.

This method of termite removal is simple and takes little effort. Place your stakes and wait a few weeks to see the progress.

Like the first method, you should reapply new bait stations every few weeks or when necessary.

Termite Prevention Tips

If you want to prevent your home from experiencing future termite problems, we’d like to share a few tips and tricks with you.

Remove Moisture

Moisture helps termites live. Without moisture, termites will be able to survive. Remove all moisture around your house by adding gutters and diverting rainwater away from the wood. Also, make sure your plumbing is leak-proof.

Less Wood-to-Ground Contact

Make sure your wood or siding doesn’t touch the ground. Doing so will keep the material from retaining water and prevent the invasion of termites.

Use Termite-resistant Wood

Another tip is to build with termite-resistant supplies. It can cost more money but be more effective in the long run.

Inspect Your Home Frequently

It is always a good idea to hire professional inspectors to catch any unwanted termites before the damage becomes too much. Yearly inspections are a good idea.
